Nals of Michigan

Award: $1,000

Deadline: Jan. 15, 2009

Requirements: Applicants must be high school seniors, enrolled in a school of advanced education (including the current school year) or a Nals of Michigan member; have at least a “B” average or, if a percentile system is used, an average not below 90 percent; be in need of financial assistance; and be able to enroll in the fall term in a school of advanced education in the legal field. They also must submit an official transcript; a 1-page letter of recommendation from a current teacher or counselor; and a 1-page autobiographical statement.

Notes: The award covers the cost of books and tuition. The scholarship is open to any qualified applicant in the legal field and is awarded based on scholastic or legal career achievements, future career goals, demonstration of financial need and leadership ability.

North Carolina Paralegal Association , Inc.

Award: First place: $400; second place: $300; third place: $200; fourth place: $100; plus all four winners will receive a 1-year, free NCPA student membership, and one free student registration to NCPA’s 26th Annual Seminar from March 26 to March 28 in Wilmington, N.C.

Deadline: Jan. 31, 2009

Requirements: Winners are selected based on an essay contest on the topic “I have chosen to be a paralegal…” Any paralegal enrolled in an accredited North Carolina paralegal educational program is eligible. Essays must be typed on letter-sized paper and can’t exceed two pages in length.

Notes: Essays must be submitted with a cover sheet containing the applicant’s name, address, telephone number and paralegal program. This information should not be included in the body of the essay.

American Association for Paralegal Education

Award: Five scholarships of $500 each.

Deadline: Feb. 15, 2009

Requirements: Applicants must be registered as full- or part-time students at a school that has a Lambda Epsilon Chi chapter; and must submit an application, a 500-word essay, a transcript evidencing at least a B average, and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the paralegal or legal assistant studies department of the qualifying institution.

Notes: The scholarship award is made payable to the recipient and the recipient’s school, and is to be used to continue the pursuit of the student’s paralegal education. Past recipients are eligible to apply.

Association of West Virginia Paralegals

Award: CLA exam fee.

Deadline: Feb. 28, 2009

Requirements: Applicants must be AWVP members in good standing, be qualified to sit for the Certified Legal Assistant exam, and submit a 1,000- to 1,500-word essay on what the CLA designation and program means to them, or on the advantages and disadvantages of certification and licensure.

Notes: The winner will have one year from the date of the award to sit for the CLA exam. The winner will be notified prior to the annual AWVP conference in May. Checks will be mailed directly to the National Association of Legal Assistants.

Vermont Paralegal Organization

Award: $500 and a 1-year VPO student membership.

Deadline: March 1, 2009

Sierra Nevada Assn. of Paralegals

Award: Amount varies

Deadline: Year round

Requirements: Applicants must be members of SNAP and applications must be received at least 60 days before the event for which a scholarship is sought.

Notes: Scholarships are given to assist in funding registration and textbook costs of student members; to assist a SNAP member with the costs of attending the National Association of Legal Assistants’ Certified Legal Assistant short course; to assist a SNAP member with the expense of sitting for the NALA CLA or Certified Legal Assistant Specialist examination; to assist a SNAP member with the costs of attending the annual NALA convention; to assist in funding the registration for SNAP’s annual seminar or other legal education seminars; and to assist in funding professional enhancement courses or seminars. Individual scholarship awards will be determined at the discretion of the SNAP Scholarship Committee and will not exceed $300.

Western New York Paralegal Association

Award: $1,000 to a student in a 4-year program; two $500 awards to students in 2-year programs.

Deadline: Year Round

Requirements: Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from the college, a résumé, transcript, and a short essay explaining why they chose paralegal studies. Applicants must be enrolled in a 2-year or 4-year program leading to a degree in paralegal studies at a school in the Western New York area. Also, students who apply must maintain a grade point average equivalent to the Dean’s list or higher.
